In Search of a Human Society

It is our world. It does not belong to the corporations or politicians. Perhaps it is time to put the future of our human society to a vote.

In Search of a Human Society

China has released a white paper entitled “A Global Community of Shared Future: China’s Proposals and Actions.”

The paper states that China wants to ‘raise the concept of a global community of shared future as the world is undergoing changes on a scale unseen in a century with various problems posing unprecedented challenges for human society.”

To build a global community of shared future is to pursue openness, inclusiveness, mutual benefit, equity and justice, the white paper says. ‘The goal is not to replace one system or civilization with another. Instead, it is about countries with different social systems, ideologies, histories, shared rights, and shared responsibilities in global affairs.’

Human society. That is not a term we hear very often in the West. Indeed, we are continuously discouraged from thinking of such things. In our war-and-power-obsessed world, a quest for a better, more human and, dare I say, lasting society is a revolutionary thought.

Rousseau’s notion of the social contract is so far removed from our daily lives that most people do not even realise that many governments once spent the majority of our tax dollars not on wars, but on the very things that were the very definition of a human society.
