Tunisia: President Kais Saied rejects EU financial aid on immigration

Tunisia’s President, Kais Saied, said on Monday evening that his country was refusing to accept the funds allocated by the European Union to Tunisia, which he described as “charity”, and whose “derisory” amount would run counter to the agreement concluded in July between the two parties.

Tunisia rejects EU financial aid, casting doubt on immigration deal

The European Commission last month said it would disburse 127 million euros ($133 million) in aid to Tunisia as part of the deal to fight illegal immigration from Africa to Europe.

“Tunisia rejects what the EU announced, not because of the small amount … but because the proposal conflicts with the memorandum of understanding signed in July,” Saied said.

The EU’s extractive trade policies in Tunisia contribute to migration

Since the start of the year, the number of people fleeing North Africa by boat to the European Union has increased significantly. Even though some of them are people on the move from sub-Saharan Africa, using countries like Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya as transit points, many are locals who can no longer make a living in their own country.

The Night the Cops Tried to Break Thelonious Monk

‘Usually Monk walked. He ambled across the city on feet as light as a tap-dancer. He weaved his way down block after block, whistling, humming, snapping his fingers. Monk liked to take different routes, but most of them led eventually to the Hudson River, where the large man in the strange hat would lean on the railing and watch the lights of the city dance on the black water.’
