Grace under pressure
Cooling palm across my brow
Eyes of an angel
Lay me down

Elbow – In Concert : Sixth & I, Washington, DC – 28 April 2008

I only saw Elbow in concert once. It was an odd period in their career. They were playing massive, sold-out arena-shows in the UK but were still trying to establish a larger following in North America.

So the show in Washington, DC was held at The Sixth & I Historic Synagogue in 2008.

It was an amazing venue and the show was surprisingly intimate and the sound was excellent, reminding me in many ways of the many, many other shows I had seen in the University of Toronto’s Convocation Hall.

The band was relaxed and happy and rested and they were clearly happy being so close to such an enthusiastic crowd.

At one point, Guy joined us in enjoying a guitar solo and he gazed out, his eyes began to slowly take in the architecture, before finally coming to rest on amazing ceiling. (below)

Of course our eyes followed his and when he looked back down again he saw all of us, gazing up at the ceiling in splendid wonder.

He laughed so hard and everyone looked back at him to see what was so funny.

We knew at once. We had shared ‘one of those concert moments,’ the ones we remember and share over and over again until friends and family cannot stand it any more. Like this moment…
